The challenge for me in writing this dissertation has been to create a policy framework for sustainability that is more commensurable with other sciences and policy approaches than that provided by neoclassical economics. The aim is to provide an approach in which complexity and incertitude can be better accommodated, and from which more effective policy for amelioration of complex contemporary issues can be derived. In essence, I am arguing that a cognitive and epistemic shift is required to bring about a paradigm change in which sustainability frames economic policy, rather than as at present, where economics is used to frame sustainability policy.
