Abstract
Mobility is arguably the most palpable social phenomenon in contemporary China, and media are perhaps principally responsible for creating a 'sense of place' in this era of urbanisation and displacement. Concerned with 'arrivals' and 'departures', this talk considers jingcheng (Chinese villagers going to the city) and chuguo (Chinese nationals going overseas) - the two significant tropes of mobility in contemporary China - in the context of cinema. It examines, through a reading of a number of recent Chinese films, some narrative forms and discursive strategies in representing the city as a translocal and transnational space.
