The construction of the vice-regal residence on Rottnest Island was begun in 1858, during the tenure (1855-62) of Arthur Kennedy, and enjoyed especially by John Hampton who was governor 1862-68. It was designed by Richard Jewell, the Clerk of Works, in Victorian Gothic style, and completed in 1864 by Henry Vincent.

Alfred Stone's 1864 photo of the Governor's residence on Rottnest, now the Rottnest Hotel. That's Stone sitting on the steps, so he must have an assistant to remove the lens cap.
